Ukrainian Village

“ A local mainstay on the northern end of Denman Street, this restaurant has retained a soul that is often lost in the more commercialised eateries around Vancouver. The decor had an unmistakably touch of homeliness, and the waitress, who looked absolutely stunning in her traditional dress, provided hospitality more akin to a stay at a relative’s place. The menu was easy to navigate and items were very reasonably priced. There must have been a magician in the kitchen because the meal served was incredibly captivating. The plates came filled to the brim and each component of the meal was packed with unique flavours that worked well with each other. The ingredients used were on the simpler side but were incredibly balanced across meats and vegetables and nothing felt over processed or over seasoned. For reference, my wife and I sampled a considerable cross section of the Ukrainian cuisine. We had as our starter the Solianca (a tangy sour cream and tomato soup). For mains, we ordered 1) the Roasted Duck served with Mashed Potato and Coleslaw, and 2) the ‘Ukrainian Dinner’: a diverse sampling platter of pierogis (three different fillings), cabbage rolls, coleslaw salad, sausage, sour cream and mustard. We also ordered a shot of Stolichnaya (a vodka) and Ukrainian Iced Tea as drinks, and had a Kiev Cake as dessert. While the portion sizes were massive, we did manage to finish everything. As one of the few independent places that continues to serve a good ol’ classic meal, this place is sure to please even when everything else around this city keeps choppin’ and changin’. ”

“ This place is amazing but I must ask that you do not come here and make it more busy than it already is. I have my seat next to the window and it’s extremely annoying when I have to wait for my spot. I only order 2 items off the menu because they are so amazing I can’t think of trying anything else although I should because the quality of my usual is always amazing! Ice Tea is out of this world. The Ukrainian dinner is insane and don’t get me started on the schnitzel Omg this place has been my go to for years and the only reason I am reviewing is because I want them to continue their success and stay a local hidden gem for years to come. “ What a delight to finally try this place. I've noticed it for decades but always end up eating the Asian options in this neighborhood instead. The building, decor and server all looked authentically Ukrainian. We were greeted and seated sweetly and I needed to charge my phone. Our server graciously helped me put my phone on an outlet in the back since there wasn't one anywhere in the dining room. My son and I weren't too hungry so we shared the borsch and pilmeni. Although borsch isn't my favorite type of soup in general, this one was tasty with cabbage not overly mushy so it was perfect for me. It was nice of them to split it for us. I was mostly delighted by the pilmeni dumplings which I had never tried before. The filling was very tasty and the wrapper had a nice bite. Sour cream, butter and chili sauce were all served with it but they were also great on their own. The server recommended the desserts which I usually pass on but she seemed very proud of her offerings so I got something that I'd never heard of before - Kiev cake. What a delight that was too! Layers, different textures, different temperatures and all very light. Hard to describe what it is but it had layers of meringue room temperature, chocolate cream that was fridge temperature, nuts surrounded the outside walls and a little torched top. I'm so glad that I tried it. I'm so happy that I finally tried this place since they're one of the oldest restaurants in all of the West end. 30years! Highly recommend! ”
